Junior Lifeguard programs were developed to provide beach and water safety training for boys and girls. The programs provide a sound aquatic background while acquainting participants with the hazards of the marine environment. Programs provide education and experience in ocean safety, first aid, rescue techniques, beach activities, physical fitness, and marine safety operations, while exposing participants to an environment that emphasizes courtesy, respect, discipline and good sportsmanship.

Programs are designed for children ages 9 to 17. Programs will vary in length and content but participants must meet the minimum requirements of the agency's program they wish to participate in. Although programs vary, participants are usually placed into one of four age divisions:

AA  16 - 17 years old
A
14 - 15 years old
B
   12 - 13 years old
C
     9 - 11 years old

Junior Lifeguards are invited to compete at the CSLSA Regional Competition each year in July, the USLA National competition each August, and the California State Games each July.

CSLSA Grants for Junior Lifeguard Programs

The CSLSA Junior Lifeguard Committee has designated the following areas to receive grant monies:
  1. Equipment - Chapters can be awarded up to $1000 for equipment used in their Junior Lifeguard programs.
  2. Training - Chapters can be awarded up to $1000 for the training of personnel directly involved in the Junior Lifeguard program.
  3. Logistics - Chapters can be awarded up to $1000 to help fund transportation, recruitment, materials, public education programs, and other areas of the Junior Lifeguard program.

Requests for grant monies should be made in writing by coordinators and co-signed by chief officers and chapter presidents. The request should clearly state what the monies will be used for and how the award will impact the jg program. There should be documented accounting of how the monies are going to be spent. Send to: jrguards@cslsa.org

Junior Guard Annual Contest
The CSLSA Junior Guard division hosts a creative contest each year and awards a scholarship to the winner. Contests could require visual art, photography, or written prose. The winning artwork selections are entered in the USLA’s national contest every November. View winning samples of Bumper Stickers, Posters, Tidebook Covers, Beach Safety visual, and Essays from previous years by clicking on the relative words.

2018
posterThe challenge created for last year is extended through 2018. The 2018 contest repeats the requirement: create a logo that is unique to the CSLSA Junior Lifeguards; a symbol that will identify the California JG organization. This logo is affixed, included or printed on all communications, stationary, t-shirts, etc. to aid and promote instant public recognition. The 2018 contest winner will receive a $400 scholarship.

Congratulations to Sammi Starks from Huntington Beach City who received a special scholarship for 2017.

Bobby Burnside Memorial Award
California Junior Guard of the Year

In 2009, the Bobby Burnside Memorial Award was established in memory of Bobby Burnside, son of former Los Angeles County chief Bob Burnside. (Chief Burnside designed the personal plaque given to the winner and the agency plaque that hangs in the lifeguard headquarters for a year.) From agency-nominations (received by noon on the day prior to the Fall CSLSA BOD meeting), the CSLSA Junior Lifeguard Committee annually chooses the Bobby Burnside Memorial Award recipient from the JG of the Year nominees. Congratulations to the winner of the California Junior Guard of the Year:
